Adoption Awareness

Project Overview

This project was made for my Design Studio I class. The purpose of the assignment was to bring awareness to a topic we felt strongly about. We had to create three different designs, each showcasing a visual strategies we learned in class, and we could only use two colors for each piece.

I picked adoption since I am adopted and I believe it's an important topic to talk about. In class, I went through a lot of sketches, and research, and settled on detournement, personification, and irony as my three visual strategies.

My first design is based off of Michelangelo's famous "The Creation of Adam". The baby holding a shaker replaced Adam and the parent replaced God. The original piece represents the divine breath of life from God to Adam, and my recreation of it stems from that same thought, that the baby was given another chance by its new family.

My second design is simple; a baby elephant got adopted by an ant couple. When I think of adoption, a lot of families I know that have adopted kid from a different country. I have a lot of friends adopted from China by a lot of white American families. I wanted it to be easy to notice the "difference" between the baby and the parents and chose the two animals in the animal kingdom that are completely different in size.

My third design features a typical "Karen". The idea behind this came to me when I saw a video on Instagram of a family posting about her family and how her kids all were adopted from foster care. There was a comment under it that said something along the lines of "i have my own kids, but good for you for adopting!". This comment just made me glare at my phone screen for a bit too long.
